Aspen represents that picture perfect nature experience from majestic mountains to gorgeous green meadows. It offers amazing winter adventures or a fun outdoor summer trip. With so many centrally located activities, it is hard to fit everything into one visit. Known for its quaint but sophisticated small town feel, Aspen aims to please even the most seasoned traveler. Aspen is typically thought of for all of the amazing winter sports that it has to offer. To have a great skiing or snowboarding experience, Aspen is considered one of the best. From heli-skiing, cross country skiing and powder tours, whatever you think of to do in the snow is here! When not on the slopes there are many cozy spots to unwind and spend time with family or friends. There is a great balance of being in nature but not roughing it. Instead you will feel quite pampered.
A few years ago, my family chose Aspen as a summer trip. Most people tend to think of Aspen as a winter vacation but we wanted our children to experience its beauty during the summer. We were not disappointed and were in awe of the sights that surrounded us. To get a panoramic view I suggest visiting the Sundeck Restaurant at the top of Aspen Mountain. The views are breathtaking and the food was great too! Our children could not get enough of the gondolas during our visit. This is another good way to get a bird’s eye view of Aspen. Downtown Aspen offers so much for a small area. There is so much to do from shopping to eating for every occasion.
In Snowmass Village we visited the Mammoth Discovery Center and enjoyed the hands on learning experience. Rock climbing and lunch was a lot of fun at Elk Camp on Snowmass Mountain. We enjoyed plenty of hikes in the nearby mountains especially the majestic Maroon Bells. Biking is of course another activity and there are many options depending on your experience level. Our family chose a beautiful ride from Snowmass to Aspen town. It was a great way to view our surroundings. For our youngest son’s birthday we decided to take a Blazing Adventures Jeep Tour which included an outdoor BBQ dinner at Burlingame Cabin nestled in the front yard of Mount Daly. We stayed until the evening for campfire songs and s’mores.
A great way to experience Aspen is to stay at The Little Nell, a luxurious 5 star hotel with the only ski-in/ski-out access on Aspen Mountain. It is rich in history which began as the summer hunting ground for the Ute Indians. Later it was a miner’s retreat, railroad stop and the grazing pasture for the Aspen Dairy. Little Nell’s signature restaurant, Element 47 earned the Five-Star recognition in 2015 and as of 2016 56 restaurants around the world hold this recognition. Another Little Nell restaurant is Ajax Tavern, which has a mountainside patio that can be seen from halfway up the mountain. Known for their burgers and truffle fries, it is a great spot to recharge and enjoy delicious treats! No matter where you are in Aspen, the beauty of nature surrounds you.
